B. C. Forest Products (1957 – 1998) ran this mill, followed by
Fletcher Challenge. Norske Skog acquired this and her sister mill at
Elk Falls in November 2000. NorskeCanada arose in August 2001 when the
Norske Skog mills combined with Powell River and Pt. Alberni
(previously Pacifica Papers). The four mills are within a 160 km radius
of each other.
NorskeCanada is managed from Vancouver. With a 29.4% interest in
NorskeCanada, Norske Skog remains their largest shareholder, and Norske
Skog's new president remains Chairman of the board for NorskeCanada.
Norske Skog, a worldwide paper giant with a controlling interest in
PanAsia Paper, is presently building a new plant in China. This plant
will use 100% recycled paper. NorskeCanada bought Western Canada's
largest de-inking plant this December.
Norkse Skog also operates in Europe, AustralAsia, and South America. Norske Skog World
Over all this presides Jan Oskum, new CEO (January 2004). Jan Oskum, in
the past two years has been: Senior Vice President Corporate Strategy
and Deputy CEO, Norske Skog Chairman of the Board in NorskeCanada,
Member of the Board in PanAsia Paper and Malaysia Newsprint Industries,
Malaysia. He remains Chairman of the Board of NorskeCanada.
The Company prides itself on its environmental and social sensibility.
This acquisition was a bit of a blow to Norske's environmental record,
because dioxins emissions in the company overall went up. This is
because the primary fuel for the boilers in these old BC plants is
salt-laden bark.
Since their purchase they have run at a loss financially, for three years.
Their president reports (pdf) that this was due to several conditions,
including poorer markets. "2002 was about as a bad as it gets in our
business."
