Crofton mill to invest in odour-eating technology

The sulphurous stink of the Crofton pulp mill could be slashed up to
one third by the fall with the installation of odour-eating equipment,
say NorskeCanada officials.
The mill is planning to pipe sulphur-laden gases - which produce a
putrid rotten-egg smell - from its wood chip digesting system to a
boiler for incineration. Also, one of five backup kilns on site without
odour scrubbing will be fitted with piping.

Environmentalists celebrated with glee June 17, when BC Hydro abandoned the
Duke Point natural gas power plant and the $120 million it had invested over
11 years.
But also in a party hearty mood was forest industry giant Norske Canada and
former BC Liberal Finance Minister Gary Collins.
That's because Norske stands to make tens of millions in profits by producing
electricity at its pulp and paper mills and selling it to an energy-starved
Vancouver Island.

Mill's requested tax cut would be devastating, says mayor

City council has steadily reduced taxes for Campbell River's largest employer but it's not enough for NorskeCanada.
The pulp and paper company operates Elk Falls Mill and paid
approximately $8.1 million in property taxes last year to the City of
Campbell River. According to Mayor Lynn Nash, NorskeCanada wants that
total reduced by half.

Norske ranked among nation’s top polluters

Tensions relating to health concerns and emission levels are at a
heightened state following the release last week of information ranking
NorskeCanada’s Crofton Division as the eighth worst polluter in the
nation.
The report, compiled with data from the National Pollutant Release
Inventory and presented by the Commission for Environmental
Cooperation, ranked 2,257 sites across the country based on total
