Toxic Sludge is not Soil Amendment

Dear Minister Penner: I urge you to immediately reverse the The Soil Amendment Code of Practice. The Code facilitates the spread of industrial toxic waste, including pulp mill sludge, fly-ash and domestic and industrial sewage and water on B.C.’s farms and forests, including watershed lands. Known toxins in sludge and fly-ash include heavy metals, benzenes and phenolics, dioxins, PCBs and a wide range of other bacterial contaminants. Many of these chemicals could have persistent effects on food-growing soil, livestock and wildlife lasting into the indefinite future. Minister, I urge you to prevent the widespread contamination of British Columbia and not allow toxic waste to masquerade as fertilizer. Industrial waste needs to be contained and not spread by the truckload throughout the province. Persitent Organic Pollutants are known to be present in pulp mill and sewage sludge. Please let me know how the Ministry of Environment is going to safeguard the environment and public health, as required under commitments made by Canada under the UN Stockholm Treaty.
